Curriculum - Science

“Science is the field of study that attempts to describe and understand the nature of the universe. It is an integral part of the universe stretching the minds of young people and helping us to make complex things seem possible.” – quote from Qualifications and Curriculum Authority

The Science Co-ordinator has compiled this policy and has current responsibility for the implementation of this policy to the Deputy Head Teacher and the Head Teacher. Science is a core subject of the National Curriculum and contributes to a broad and balanced curriculum.

Principles

The work of the Science Department at Redwood Park School is underpinned by our belief that Science is exciting, challenging and relevant to today’s world. They emphasise laboratory skills and aim to develop the cognitive abilities necessary to the study and appreciation of Science. Every pupil will be encouraged to achieve his or her potential whist at Redwood Park School. This will be achieved by:

bullet valuing the pupils’ existing knowledge
bullet allowing pupils to follow up their own ideas
bullet developing their thinking skills
bullet encouraging them to evaluate their own work

Aims and Objectives

The aims and objectives of the Science Co-ordinator and the Science staff are to ensure that the pupils are given well structured, stimulating and enjoyable lessons so they can learn and progress throughout their time at Redwood Park School; culminating in certification to help them achieve their chosen careers.

The Curriculum and its Organisation

Currently there are three Science specialist teachers delivering the Science Curriculum at Redwood Park School in conjunction with another teacher currently teaching Science to her own class in her tutor base in the Intensive Support Unit. In the lower school (Key Stage 3) the National Curriculum is delivered through units of study developed from the Qualifications and Curriculum (QCA) Schemes of Work. These units are based upon the best ideas and current good practise in modern Science education. In the upper school (Key Stage 4) the National Curriculum is delivered to Year 10 and 11 through the AQA unit award scheme of work over two years. Alternatively six GCSE modules in Science are also offered to pupils culminating in a single Science GCSE over two years. In the last ten years we have been pleased with the excellent results the pupils have obtained.

In years 10 and 11, all pupils will produce a portfolio of work which is used towards one or more certificates of achievement. The more able pupils are also entered for GCSE single science examinations. Homework is set weekly to all pupils and is based on the current topic of work.
